The elementary school aged protagonist in this book finds herself in a science fiction/fantasy battle between exotic alien pets (like a neon green kitten that talks) and robots (in the form of a vacuum cleaner.) Packaging this issue for elementary and middle school kids can be a challenge, so many events in the science fiction of the book border on absurdity to make sure and stay sensitive about the subject. In the end, this book also touches on scientific topics, so if some homeless kids in our lives pick it off of a shelf, they will understand that school can help them in their struggles, and that in the end, they can be whatever they set their minds to, as they grow up.
